In math class, students learn new mathematical content, practice skills, and explore complex mathematical ideas. Math Workshop is a structure for math class that encourages independence, responsibility, and risk-taking in students, creating mathematicians with a solid foundation of number sense that results in a conceptual understanding of mathematics. This professional learning supports teachers to implement Math Workshop, providing students with engaging learning experiences that promote mathematical thinking, mathematical discourse, and a positive disposition toward mathematics.

Learning Goals

After this course, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the purpose and use of each of the three structures of Math Workshop.
  • Verbalize and act on the roles of the teacher and students in the Math Workshop Classroom.
  • Implement a plan for getting started with Math Workshop.
  • Create a Math Workshop classroom that relies on formative assessment and differentiation.
