We are getting ready to go BIG—to a place in students' writing beyond five-paragraph analyses of themes and formulas that dictate their every sentence; to a place past our fear and their dread; to a place of passion and discovery in analytical writing.

This isn't an insignificant change, though. To give students the transformational skills of analytical writing that are truly transferable, you will likely be striking out into a brave new world of teaching far different from the way you were taught and far different than the way you've been teaching analytical writing in the past. You need to prepare.

That's what we're doing in this webinar series: giving you the background, the foundation, the language, and the practice you need to feel ready to jump into this new kind of writing work with your students! In our time together, we will:

  • Talk about why this shift is so necessary;
  • Give you tips for explaining this change to others;
  • Introduce you to the four essential tools of analysis and let you practice with them;
  • Help you build creative energy into all the nooks and crannies of your classroom so that passionate writing can happen;
  • Teach you how to turn students' passions into texts for analysis;
  • Help you plan how to use activities for discovery and crafting techniques throughout the writing process in whole-class, small-group, and conferring settings.

The following is a description of the learning objectives to be met within each session of this series:

Session 1: Getting Ready to Make a Shift

You're interested in seeing what lies "beyond literary analysis", but you need to know a few things first. In our first session, we'll explore the fundamentals of a different kind of analysis—a kind of analysis that will enliven your students' writing while giving them transferable skills for all kinds of analytical writing down the road.

First, we'll share rationale for expanding the definition of "text" in your class and how to articulate that to colleagues, parents, and administrators). Then, you'll be introduced to the four essential tools of all analysis. Together, we'll practice identifying these elements in real world analysis and begin developing language to talk about them so that you are ready to teach these elements to students.

Session 2: Getting Ready to Help Students Explore Their Passions

If students are going to pursue their passions through analytical writing, we need to lay some groundwork. First, we need to get to know our students so that we can support them in the passions they will explore. In this session, we will share strategies and routines that will infuse your classroom with passion and discovery from day one—bringing students' interests to the forefront while allowing you to do some important research on your students' needs.

Then, we will explore some activities designed specifically to prepare students to write analysis that draws on this passion and expertise (and you'll get to try a few yourself)! We'll end our time together with an interactive discussion that will prepare you to help students take their topics and narrow them into texts that are ripe for analysis.

Session 3: Crafting Techniques to Support Student Authority, and Using These Moves!

Building on our first two sessions, we'll spend our final session together exploring what happens when the four essential tools of analysis meet the texts about which our students are passionate. We will introduce you to (and let you play around with) activities and crafting techniques to support your students' ideas, structure, and authority in analytical writing. After you've given them a try, you'll be able to use these moves with your students the next day to take their writing to the next level. We'll also show you some ways that you can use these strategies to improve the analyses your students have been writing all along.

Finally, we'll give you some suggestions about how to use activities for discovery and crafting techniques in different learning contexts: whole-class instruction, small-group instruction, and in writing conferences. Whether you want to take your students' current literary analysis work to more engaging and authentic places in incremental steps, or jump into the world of authentic analysis with both feet, this session will give you the tools you need!


Allison Marchetti and Rebekah O'Dell are coauthors of the professional books, Writing with Mentors and Beyond Literary Analysis. Their popular blog "Moving Writers" focuses on writing instruction in middle and high school classrooms with an emphasis on voice and authenticity. Traveling the country to work with teachers and students provides constant inspiration as they help educators do the hard-and-transformative work of teaching real writing.

Allison and Rebekah are high school English teachers in Richmond, Virginia. Graduates of the University of Virginia, they are experienced teachers in both independent and public schools, from inclusion classrooms to AP and IB. Both have been past presenters at NCTE.

The cost of this Webinar Series is $169.00 per person. If you register a group of three to nine people at the same time there is a discounted rate of $159.00 per person. Participants will receive a series of email correspondence from Heinemann. The first email confirmation will serve as your receipt for the webinar series along with some general instructions on how to prepare your computer for the webinar. The second email confirmation will be sent approximately 2 days prior to each webinar date with a link to our webinar platform Zoom, directing you to the webinar class and giving you instructions on how to log in.
