Join Jen Serravallo in this live webinar series to learn how to assess, evaluate, and teach to support student comprehension.

Drawing from Jen's book, Understanding Texts & Readers, you'll learn about ways to use text levels as a teacher's tool. You will learn more about what to expect of reader response over a range of texts so that you can target specific goals and skills, first articulated in her bestselling title, The Reading Strategies Book. You'll find text complexity more simplified, comprehension clarified, and will feel more confident matching kids to books and strategies.

Also, drawing from A Teacher's Guide to Reading Conferences, you'll explore how to use these same skill progressions to move readers along within their goals, and you'll study how to prompt and coach readers in one-on-one conferences and in small groups as you support them with goals.

During each 60-minute session, Jen will share practical and proven classroom strategies, provide video examples, and lead engaging live discussion.

Also consider joining Jen on these same days in her companion Writing Strategies Webinar from 3:00pm–4:00pm. Enroll for the Writing Strategies Webinar series here.

The following is a description of the learning objectives to be met within each session of this series:

  • Organizing our thinking about comprehension: a hierarchy of comprehension goals and skills
  • Understanding shifts in expectations of reader response aligned to shifts in text complexity
  • Creating our own formative assessment with goal-aligned question stems

  • Evaluating student responses using skill progressions
  • Understanding how strategies support goals over time
  • Knowing the elements of effective strategies, and how to create your own by reflecting on your reading processes

  • Supporting readers through coaching, prompting and feedback
  • Using skill progressions during conferences to figure out next steps
  • Working efficiently: using small group instruction for students with common goals
