Join Jennifer Serravallo's colleague Clarisa Leal for this special live webinar series presented in Spanish! Clarisa will present an in-depth look at Jen's books El libro de estrategias de escritura and Teaching Writing in Small Groups.

In this three-part presentation, designed by Jennifer Serravallo and translated and adapted for Spanish teachers by Clarisa Leal, participants will learn to match methods to purpose throughout the school year. Clarisa will guide you through assessing individual students' strengths and needs, leading goal setting conversations, and following up on goals with one-on-one conferring and small groups in Spanish writing instruction. During each 75-minute session, Clarisa will share practical and proven classroom strategies, lead guided viewings of original video examples from Spanish immersion classrooms, and engage with participants in live discussion focused on authentic student work in Spanish. Jen will join for a portion of the series for Q&A with participants.

  • Using goals and skill progressions to assess writing in Spanish language instruction


  • Understanding strategies
  • What makes our feedback effective? What types of feedback do we use in small group instruction and conferring?
  • How strategies support goals over time and throughout the writing process


  • Creating effective strategies from a study of mentor texts and/or our own writing processes in Spanish
  • Strategies and prompts in conferences and in small group strategy lessons during Spanish language instruction
  • Exploring other small group types to match methods to purposes

About the Presenters

Jennifer Serravallo is a literacy consultant, author, and speaker, who supports teachers by making responsive instruction doable. She is the author of several popular titles, including The New York Times' bestselling The Reading Strategies Book and The Writing Strategies Book, both of which have been translated into French, Chinese, and Spanish (now available from Heinemann). Her newest professional books include Teaching Writing in Small Groups; Connecting with Students Online; Understanding Texts & Readers; and The Teacher's Guide to Reading Conferences. She also recently released Complete Comprehension for Fiction and Nonfiction, which are revised and reimagined whole book assessments and teaching resources based on the award-winning IRA. Clarisa Leal received a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University. She later worked in Nicaragua as a first grade teacher, grade level coordinator, and literacy coach. Under Clarisa's guidance the school made sustainable improvements in literacy. She then moved to New York City and worked as a Spanish teacher at an innovative and diverse private school. With the benefit of being fluent in two languages, she was part of the school's Spanish Department team and taught Spanish as a second language in first grade and sixth grade. She is currently a literacy specialist in Florida at a school with Spanish native speakers, and students who are working to develop their Spanish language and literacy skills. She's used her passion for literacy instruction in English and Spanish to take on leadership roles in her school.

Classroom teachers of grades K-8, administrators, curriculum coordinators, writing teachers, reading specialists, literacy specialists, coaches, and staff developers who support students in Spanish language and literacy instruction. Please note that Clarisa's portions of the webinar will be presented in Spanish.
