The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System (LLI) for grades 3-12 is a small-group, supplementary research-based intervention system designed for students who find reading and writing difficult. LLI can bring students to grade-level proficiency in as little as 18-24 weeks for LLI grades 3–12 when implemented with fidelity.

In this interactive two-day institute, participants will be provided with a deep understanding of the LLI Red, Gold, Purple, and Teal systems for grades 3–12 and how they specifically meet the needs of struggling readers in those grades, and how to provide effective teaching within the LLI lessons. Participants will learn how to code and analyze reading behaviors, scheduling, student grouping, teacher language and supporting students’ sustained attention and comprehension of texts.

The lesson design for LLI Red, Gold, Purple, and Teal has been extended and intensified beyond the earlier LLI levels and assumes the following:

• 45 minutes a day, 5 days a week
• 4 students at a time
• 18-24+ weeks of explicit, intensive instruction

During this grade 3–12 institute, you will:

• Learn about the LLI Red, Gold, Purple, and Teal System components and the principles upon which they are based
• See how to use systematic assessment to select students for intervention and monitor their progress
• Review video tutorial on coding and analyzing reading behaviors and linking assessment to instruction
• Be introduced to the F&P Text Gradient™ at higher levels
• Receive an introduction to the LLI lesson framework and learn how to teach each component of the lesson
• Review recommendations for addressing essential strategic actions at higher text levels through text introductions and discussions
• Determine how to conduct high-level book discussions and the facilitative teacher language that supports this discussion and leads to deeper comprehension of texts
• Analyze a variety of fiction and nonfiction series books
• Deepen understanding of research-based instructional procedures related to word study, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension
• Learn about grouping and regrouping students.
