Book clubs bring a small group of students together to talk about a book they have each chosen to read. These enjoyable community experiences deepen readers' appreciation for a common text, extend their thinking as they process and interpret the perspectives and opinions of their peers, expand their ability to express their ideas orally, and provide an authentic context for applying the norms for listening and speaking and for using academic language. Throughout this session, participants will explore how to organize and implement book clubs within their classroom and will explore how to facilitate authentic discussion about a common text.
