The Teacher Tip

Make a Lifetime’s Difference in 180 Days

March 14, 2017

Adapted from In The Middle, Third Edition by Nancie Atwell.

A good minilesson is practical, relevant, accessible, and far-reaching. When it comes to influential methods, the minilesson that kicks off each writing workshop is at least an equal partner to my conferences with individual writers. As teachers of writing, we need to be on the lookout for the tweaks that make a difference – for advice and models that make the intangible tangible and the difficult doable.

Try thoughtful, informed demonstrations and conversations with the group, followed by thoughtful, informed conversations with individual writers, giving students knowledge, strategies, self-confidence, and opportunities for excellence.
