Access the Power of the Reading-Writing Connection in Your K–1 Literacy Approach

In this single-session course, master teacher and best-selling author Regie Routman demonstrates how to raise the level of instruction for young, emergent readers and writers through authentic experiences of shared reading and writing and setting up the classroom for guided and independent practice.

Learn how reading aloud is used as a springboard for shared writing, shared reading, and independent reading and writing. Watch a writing demonstration, scaffolded conversations, sustained writing, roving conferences, and celebration conferences.

Course Objectives

  • Use literature as a springboard for shared experiences
  • Show how shared writing can be used to create multiple texts for reading
  • Help students make personal connections with the texts they write and read
  • Observe how to teach students to tell and write a continuous story over time
  • Learn to support students in narrowing a topic with elaboration and detail — even if they don’t know all their letters and sounds.
