Nonfiction is the stuff of real life—life with all its contrasts and contradictions, all its tough questions and aha moments, all its half-truths and little white lies. Our job as teachers is to make sure students ask the big questions as they read nonfiction texts, such as "What surprised me?", "What did the author think I already knew?", and "What changed, challenged, or confirmed what I already knew?"

During this workshop, the authors will share strategies that are helpful for getting kids into reading nonfiction texts, helping them throughout their reading, and then extending their thinking after they've finished reading.

This workshop will focus on the principles and the strategies that will help all students, even those who struggle the most with texts, comprehend them more fully, and assess their implications more thoughtfully and responsibly. We'll explore the big issues of today—reading nonfiction, close reading, and asking text-dependent questions—while also attending to the ever critical topics of engagement and lifelong learning.

Learning Objectives

  • Before-, during-, and after-reading strategies that help build engagement, fix-up confusions, and create conversations
  • The nonfiction signposts that help students make inferences, recognize author's purpose and bias, and find evidence in the text
  • The stances that help students read with a critical eye
  • Vocabulary strategies that help students when the text is tough

About the Presenters

Respected educators Kylene Beers and Bob Probst have worked together for over a decade, helping teachers improve the literacy of students. Kylene is the author of When Kids Can't Read/What Teachers Can Do, and Bob is the author of Response and Analysis. Together, they are co-authors of Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading and their recently published follow-up book, Reading Nonfiction: Notice & Note Stances, Signposts, and Strategies.

Kylene was President of the National Council of Teachers of English and edited the NCTE journal Voices from the Middle. Bob was a board member on the Conference on English, an NCTE journal columnist, and a member of the NCTE Commission on Reading. Both speak nationally and internationally to administrators and teachers on literacy issues.

Who Should Attend?

ELA, reading, and social studies teachers in grades 4-12, as well as literacy coaches and literacy coordinators/supervisors.
