Presented by Matt Glover and Katie Wood Ray

Overview

In this one-day workshop based on their Heinemann book, Already Ready, Katie Wood Ray and Matt Glover show you how to help primary-aged students develop crucial understandings about writing.

When you give very young children paper and markers and invite them to make books, interesting thinking starts to happen. Katie and Matt have seen it hundreds of times. In the Already Ready workshop, they show you hwo to recognize when children exhibit the kinds of thinking more experienced writers use. You'll return to your classroom with a new, powerful way to look at your young writers and strategies for turning these observations into highly effective instruction.

Katie and Matt demonstrate precisely what they watch for, and in focused discussion groups you'll practice identifying what children know about texts and their characteristics, about the writing process, and about what writers do. Through video-based examples, you'll observe and discuss ways to support and extend students' emergent understandings through read-aloud, side-by-side teaching, and share time. You'll also identify characteristics of children's literature that can be turned into effective writing curriculum. And best of all, Katie and Matt show you how to put it all together into opportunities to move children toward a lifetime of writing.
