Join Jennifer Serravallo—author of The Reading Strategies Book, and the forthcoming The Writing Strategies Book—in this special 2017 Webinar Series and Virtual PLC!

Learn to match methods to purpose throughout this school year as Jen guides you through assessing individual students' strengths and needs, leading goal setting conversations, and following up on goals with conferring and small groups. During each hour-long session, Jen will share practical and proven classroom strategies, provide video examples, and lead engaging live discussion during each session.

Each participant will also receive a free one-year subscription ($39.95 value) to the Heinemann Digital Library, an online reference library with dozens of professional books, video clips, and professional articles. The Digital Library includes Teaching Reading in Small Groups and The Literacy Teachers Playbook(s), both bestselling Jennifer Serravallo titles.

All webinar sessions will be recorded and delivered to participants.

January 12 - PART 1

  • Determining "just right" goals in reading and writing through use of formative assessment
  • How strategies support goals over time
  • Elements of effective strategies

February 7 - PART 2

  • Supporting students through coaching, prompting and feedback
  • Visual supports as a tool for independence
  • Strategies and prompts in conferences

March 23 - PART 3

  • Strategies and prompts in small group strategy lessons
  • Managing a class with different goals (and different strategies)
  • Repeated practice with strategy case studies


Jennifer Serravallo is an author, national consultant and frequent speaker at state and national literacy conferences. She was a Senior Staff Developer at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, and a NYC public school teacher in Title I schools.

Jen’s most recent book, The Reading Strategies Book, is a master collection of 300 strategies you can use to support K-8 readers. Her other books include The Literacy Teacher's Playbooks, Teaching Reading in Small Groups, and Conferring with Readers, co-authored with Gravity Goldberg. Her online course, “Teaching Reading in Small Groups: Matching Methods to Purposes”, is available on Heinemann's Digital Campus.

Who should participate?

Teachers of grades K-8, literacy coaches, principals, curriculum and instructional leaders.


The cost of this Webinar Series is $199.00 per person. If you register a group of three to nine people at the same time there is a discounted rate of $189.00 per person. When signing up ten or more participants at one time, please call in advance for large group discount pricing. Tuition also includes access to the recorded webinar sessions for up to 90 days after the conclusion of the webinar series.


There is no book requirement; however, it is highly recommended that participants have a copy of The Reading Strategies Book. If you do not own a copy you may purchase one online here.


Participants will receive a series of email correspondence from Heinemann. The first email confirmation will serve as your receipt for the webinar series along with some general instructions on how to prepare your computer for the webinar. The second email confirmation will be sent approximately 2 days prior to each webinar date with a link to the platform WebEx directing you to the webinar class and giving you instructions on how to log in.
