Overview:

In this two part series, M. Colleen Cruz will offer a variety of ways to bring new energy to the end of your school year and help you prepare for the beginning of next year. Using a variety of kid culture and media favorites such as Pixar shorts, Pharrell Williams music, and even commercials, Colleen will demonstrate ways to tackle two writing topics commonly described as dull or hard to teach: grammar and writing about reading.

Participants will have an opportunity to explore various media options, learn specific strategies for teaching difficult skills and concepts, and take away tips for finding and mining their own engaging kid culture materials for transformative writing instruction.

While this series is designed to complement the work of her book Unstoppable Writing Teacher, it is appropriate for both participants who are familiar with the title and those who have not yet read it.

The following is a description of the learning objectives to be met within each session of this series:

Session 1: Unstoppable Teaching: Delving into Grammar

In this first session, Colleen will demonstrate ways to bring new energy to your grammar instruction through popular media with an emphasis on narrative. She will take participants through several ways short animated films, commercials, movie trailers and other video clips can be studied and utilized to teach tricky grammar and conventions practices such as paragraphing, noun-verb agreement and tense usage. Participants will leave this webinar with ideas for titles, video clips appropriate for classroom use, as well as specific ideas and activities for next day teaching. Participants are encouraged to attend the webinar with student work samples on hand to refer to, as well as tricky grammar concepts they would like addressed.

Session 2: Unstoppable Teaching: Making Writing About Reading Irresistible

In this second session, Colleen will continue to build on the conversation started in the previous session, looking at ways a variety of media tools can help teachers tackle hard-to-teach writing skills. This webinar will focus on ways songs and music videos can be powerful texts for teaching students how to write about reading enthusiastically and well. Participants will see how using students' natural understanding of music interpretation can be transferred into the reading and responding to of poetry, short story and even informational texts. Challenging writing about reading concepts such as developing-building a theory, gathering text details, and comparing and contrasting will be discussed. Participants will leave with new insights and strategies for helping students to bring new depth and purpose to their writing about reading.
